Appointed: 1979Whereas Ms. Parler began her teaching career at DePaul Catholic in 1979 with five classes of Spanish, ranging from Spanish 1 to AP Spanish, she now enjoys other languages such as HTML, Java, and Python. As the Technology Coordinator, Ms. Parler's focus is to keep the technology functioning in the best interest of teaching, learning, and day-to-day operations. She manages both the student information and learning management systems. A life-long learner, Ms. Parler recently formalized the process by earning her MS and MEd. Never satisfied, she is currently pursuing her doctorate in Educational Leadership in Curriculum and Instruction.
Ms. Parler has earned numerous teaching accolades including Diocesan Teacher of the Year, DePaul Catholic Teacher of the Year, and an NCEA Teacher of the Year nomination. She has been honored by the Manchester Who's Who and the National Association of Professional Women's Who's Who. She is a member of NCEA, ISTE, ASCD, AERA, IEEE, NASSP, and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.Coach Parler began her coaching career at Wagner College in Staten Island in 1980. Following a 2-11 inaugural season, Coach Parler took the Shehawks to the AIAW Regionals for the next two years. After Wagner, Coach Parler moved on to taking the helm at Seton Hall University. As the D1 program expectations grew, Coach Parler found herself devoting more and more time involved in the recruiting process and less time doing what she most enjoyed -- spending time on the field teaching skills and cultivating a love for the game. After an 11-year stay, Coach Parler retired from SHU in May of 1994.
The following spring Coach Parler took the softball coaching reins at the school where she had been teaching for 15 years, DePaul Catholic. She also coached the highly-competitive ASA summer team, the North Jersey Shilohs. Coach Parler has earned numerous coaching accolades including several Conference and County Coach of the Year awards as well as the NFICA Coach of the Year. In 2019, she earned her 400th DePaul Catholic softball win. Coach Parler's philosophy is built upon her mantra, "The gift is ours to borrow." "These four years are the only ones you get, make the most of them. They will prepare you, yes; but live them, enjoy them, and honor the gift."Ms. Parler has spoken about Games in Education at the New York City Comic Con three times. A devout Constructivist, Ms. Parler believes in the "Learn by Doing" method of teaching and learning. Her talks at Comic Con included numerous references to John Dewey, which she found mildly amusing in front of an amazingly receptive audience of super-hero-, Orc-, and game icon-clad listeners.
